Diabetes Mellitus treatment at AARI
Diabetes mellitus can be broken into 3 forms: Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes & Gestational Diabetes. Type 2 Diabetes is the most common form of Diabetes and accounts for at least 90% of all cases.
Factors associated with diabetes
• Physical Inactivity
• Sedentary lifestyle
• History of gestational diabetes
• High blood pressure
• High cholesterol
• Impaired fasting glucose
• BMI> 25
• Increased waist circumference
• Risk of development increases with age
Lifestyle change is a large component of the prevention, treatment and management of type 2 Diabetes, this involves exercise, nutrition therapy and medication. As diabetes is associated with factors such as being overweight, physically inactive and have poor eating habits it is important to begin with lifestyle education. Regular exercise must form a large component of the lifestyle intervention, as a majority of people fail to complete the sufficient daily activity. The recommended exercise for Diabetes Mellitus is 210min or more per week of both aerobic and resistance exercise.
At AARI Health arena we help facilitate your treatment and management of Diabetes through our Two Cubes program. This program provides you with guidance and assistance from a Diabetes educator, Dietician, Exercise Physiologist, Podiatrist & Endocrinologist. The 8 week program provides 2 x exercise sessions per week and 1 x education session per week.
